There are slight differences in the placement of these overprints, that may be of interest to the specialist. Take them both for $3.00. [Three different but very similar 1-c postal cards were issued in 1924, 1925 & 1935. The catalogue illustrations are not particularly helpful, but to our unpracticed eye they look like the 1935 variety.]

    Well struck 11 MAI 03 S. Nicolau hand cancel ties 65-réis on 200-réis stamp franking mourning cover to New Bedford Massachusetts, red thimble LONDON MY 29 05 transit almost  complete on back, arrival marking at New Bedford also struck on back although at a slant that puts a lot of it in the black area. Sold but still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged (about 771% of original print area) & enhanced 200-dpi scan in .jpg or .tif format. $2.00 c

    From the same time period as the above, from the isle of Brava (smallest in Cabo Verde), a small mourning cover to the same address in New Bedford Massachusetts. In addition to the black borders, the back has an X pattern in black, so it is hard to read the return address (except for Brava clear as a bell) or the cancel & Lisboa transit mark that both tie the 20-réis stamp on the back (2 short perfs at one corner). The back has 3 hinge remnants which may yield to patient advances. The front has a pair of 15-réis stamps; one of those stamps has a corner perf folded inward. The cancel that ties the pair of 15-réis stamps is light but almost complete BRAVA - S. JOAO BAPTISTA.  We believe this mail went by ferry, whether stopping or skirting Fogo on its way; making a beeline for Praia, it would have landed at Sao Joao Baptista, a valley just west of that capital on the Island of Santiago! As for condition, the small chunk of the corner is gone & the small signs of wear around the edge are magnified by their contrast with the black. We cannot recall ever seeing a ferry cancel from Cabo Verde in anyone's stock. An enlarged & enhanced scan of the cancel will be sent on serious inquiry; our scan above right is just the thumbnail of it, after being cropped & rotated for ease of reading. $465.00 c

    Clear 23 FEV 1912 S. Vicente cancel on backflap & lighter cancel ties 10-r & 15-r King Carlos stamps franking small cover to Lisbon, clear -1.3.13 Lisboa Central arrival marking across most of the backflap, 2 hinge remnants on back. $27.00 c

9 / 14 / 36 official cover 'Serviços Telégrapfo-Postais de Colónia de Cabo Verde' registered Cabo Verde to Assinippi Massachusetts' via  Lisbon Portugal (October 4 backstamp), New York City (October 13), Rockland Massachusetts (October 14); arrival October 14 (violet backstamp). Contents included--a list of stamps on sale in the colony at that time, signed by Josino Marçal. A little wrinkling at cover corners. $6.75 c

Circa December 1969 (known from other correspondence) small envelope to a well-known Praia cleric, only address "N'este" (Portuguese "in this"--that is, either same city or even the same route), franked by uncancelled $30 aviation flight stamp (the correct local rate), opened neatly, recipient's annotation on back. Probably same route, and dispensing with the cancel sped it along on the correct assumption that the cleric would not reuse the stamp. In other words, local express mail at a bargain rate! $5.00 c

Lot of 40 non-philatelic Cape Verde covers (local church correspondence) selected for cancels. No Praia! Clear cancels included are Aeroporto do Sal, Boa Vista (Sal Rei), Mindelo, Mosteiros (Fogo, 1970 example marked 'AVULSA' shown at bottom), Nova Sintra (Brava), Picos, Porto Novo (S. Antao), Ribeira Brava (S. Nocolau), Santa Caterina, S. Felipe (Fogo), S. Vicente, Vila Nova (SIntra) & Vilaribeira Brava (S. Nocolau, 1969 example shown at top).       An astonishing lot of 62 non-philatelic registered local Cabo Verde covers conveying church donations to a central point in Praia. If you want high-value stamps, blocks & strips with interesting & correct usages, these are your answers. Rates we notice include: several 2$50, 3$00, 3$10 (mistake?), 3$50, 4$00 , 4$50, 6$00, 6$50 & 7$50. Lower value stamps often used to seal the backflap (such as the Maio 1968 example shown above left with two strips of 4 $30 stamps so used).
