Get out your handkerchief--this is a tear-jerker: Light BEIRA hand cancel on Higgins & Gage #8 20-réis carte postal of Portuguese Africa overprinted COMPª DE / MOCAMBIQUE to Basel Switzerland (complete 8.V.04 receiving mark on front), a little edge wear & bends at a couple of corners are not distracting. A certifiable imbecile has removed the extra stamp that was placed on the side opposite the indicia to make up the rate, so a bit of the card's design is also missing there. Are you crying yet? Clear 16 FEB06 hexagonal Beira hand cancels on 10-réis bilhete postal with pair of 5-réis stamps added to make rate to Eschweiler bei Aachen Allemagne (Germany), illustration is "Chimolo - Residencia de chefe", minor wear to the corners, lowest stamp wrapped around bottom edge (part on back is damaged), small corner crease into same stamp. Back is a personal note in German written the previous day. Gorgeous! $240.00 m-m

Almost complete 26 MAY 19 Johannesburg backstamp ties 'Opened by Censor. / Geopend door Censor 21' tape sealing #6 envelope from Beira (faint 4 MAI 19 hand cancel ties 25-r with REPUBLICA Lisbon overprint in green, complete PASSED 21/7 CENSOR in double rings on front, and a dark blue Portuguese censor marking (we think) that is somewhat faint. Forwarding mark on arrival corrects the box number. Sold but still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged (about 771% of original print area) & enhanced 200-dpi scan in .jpg or .tif format. $2.00 m

"Oterita // TC Madrid 108/8" hand-colored / tinted (and, hence, unique) real photo postcard with considerable front edge wear & corner crease & oxidation; mailed by Manuel Gomes Dos Santos on 11 JAN 21 from Beira (2 light hand cancels) to Los Angeles using then-current 1/4-centavo, 1/2-centavo & 1-centavo stamps. Sold but still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged (about 771% of original print area) & enhanced 200-dpi scan in .jpg or .tif format. $2.00 m

Almost complete hexagonal CORREIO / 16. SET. 28 / VILA PERY hand cancel on 96-réis on 60-réis reply card (bilhete postal resposta) from Higgins & Gage #37 addressed to Braunschweig (Brunswick), lengthy typed message in German on back, tiny corner crease at bottom & just a little edge wear at the top affects nothing. Message is from a young farmer who is between harvest & sowing, chiding his former military Corps brethren for not writing to him with news. [He would have been drafted to serve with the Germans in World War I.] His typing is hunt & peck, and his typewriter is German but not the best (u can be umlauted, but no symbol for double s). The modern name of the originating town is Chimoio. A translation of the message into English is now available. $95.00 m
