PERU COVERS 1951 - 1990

2 ABR (1951) first day cover for the complete 9-stamp overprinted airmail set honoring the UPU (whose anniversary was in 1949), neatly addressed to New York, small upper corner crease nowhere near the stamps. Apparently the Peruvian authorities were embarrassed to be 2 years late, so they did not include the year date in the cancel. Seldom seen because there was little worldwide enthusiasm for the issue. $20.00 pu

INFLATION OF 1991-1992

Light cancel on pair of l / m 0.45 HABILITADO overprints on pair of 80,000 Antarctic expedition bird stamps franking greeting-card size airmail cover to Columbus Ohio, opened neatly. Unpriced used in the 1993 & 1998 Scott Catalogues. Sold but still available for scholarly study & research as a full-size & enhanced 72-dpi scan in .jpg or .tif format. $1.50 pa

Express airmail cover from Lima to Oak Park Michigan franked with mixed currency stamps: S / 0.70 Ocho Reales coin and two l / m 0.40 HABILITADO overprints on 50,000 Antarctic expedition penguin stamps (one of which has a few missing perfs at the bottom). Light boxed express markings in red both sides, including 2 that tie the stamps. Also indistinct black handstamps. Stamps unpriced used in the 1993 & 1998 Scott Catalogues. Sold but still available for scholarly study & research as a full-size & enhanced 72-dpi scan in .jpg or .tif format. $1.50 p

MIRAFLORES LIMA POSTMASTER PROVISIONALS

Lot of 4 covers airmailed in 1992 - 1993 to Columbus Ohio with 0.90 meter strips of varying sizes on yellowish brown paper cut by hand from larger sheets, tied by cancels of the Miraflores Post Office at Lima. The recipient explained that the local practice was to do this when they ran out of stamps. We believe, therefore, these are on-cover examples of provisional stamps--locally printed in imperforate sheets & cut from it with scissors when needed. In the most interesting example, the date from the meter 17.12.92 is 16 days later than the hand cancel of 1 DIC, indicating that a batch would be made in the expectation it would be used for weeks. A worthy subject for further study.
