RANKIN / AT REELFOOT LAKE" black-and-white on browning paper with edge toning both sides. corners worn & rounded, 2 long internal creases. Reelfoot Lake is between Lake & Obion Counties in Tennessee. The night referred to was October 19 / 20 1908. Some of the settlers around the lake formed the Night Riders to combat the land company that was asserting its lake rights due to old land grants issued by states before the area was submerged by a significant earthquake. Captain Quintin Rankin was hung & shot in this incident; another man, a land company lawyer the Night Riders were intent on killing, escaped. For obvious reasons a rare postcard.
