"ALGOMAR SHIPPING" continental-size Christmas card with a color photo the Swedish cargo ship plying towards the viewer at speed, as seen from above, corner crease nowhere near the photo. Most of her passengers were immigrants fleeing poverty to start anew in Canada or the US. On July 21st 1918 she was torpedoed & sank in Tees Bay England with a loss of 36 lives.   ShipOwner_BritishAndAfrican_Appam-100.jpg (168941 bytes)  Appam (registered 1913 to the British & African Steam Navigation Company, Limited). Uncaptioned sepia-tone real photo post card with good focus & contrast, ship's name prominent, toning in right front (not on ship), toning on corresponding back edge too, tiny corner crease. In 1916 this vessel was captured by the German cruiser Moewe and sailed to then-neutral United States. The US District Court ordered her return to the owning company, and it sailed as the Mandingo until the WWI armistice (after which she again became the Appam). "BERLIN / 1958 / New York" copyrighted photograph of the North German Lloyd Line passenger ship SS Berlin III, side view underway near one of her major ports of call, printed regular postcard size, attribution details on back. Served in World War II as a hospital ship. Later renamed as the SS Admiral Nakhimov, which tragically sank near Novorossiysk in 1986 (423 lives lost). $15.00 s(o)rdm

"BOGASARI DUA / JAKARTA" showing the Indonesian flag geared bulk carrier underway, stern view; 3.5"x5" color photo taken by a sailor; a little dark but the focus is good so details are there. Seven real photo postcards, documenting a transatlantic voyage, with the ship sometimes referred to as Princess Irene in the captions for the English-speaking passengers. The year is 1912, which we get from all 7 captions. We see: a group of well-dressed male passengers standing by a ship life raft (shown upper left), a man & woman reclining in solitude between lifeboats with bilingual "No admittance" sign (2 similar but different--one sepia tone, the other in black & white shown upper right), deck with several passengers & funnels & rigging (shown lower right), the wake of the ship, a well-dressed couple near two large funnels (shown lower left), and a view from the forecastle including 2 smokestacks.

During World War I the Prinzess Irene became the USS Pocahontas, a US Navy transport ship. After that war she sailed again under a German flag for NDL.

Launched May 1939, this luxury trans-Pacific luxury liner was sold to the Imperial Japanese Navy in February 1941 which converted her into the Taiyö-class escort carrier Chuyo. During World War II, it carried prisoners of war (including from Wake Island & from the sinking of submarine USS Sculpin). In the fall of 1942 she was converted into an escort aircraft carrier.
