In 1916 this vessel was captured by the German cruiser Moewe and sailed to then-neutral United States. The US District Court ordered her return to the owning company, and it sailed as the Mandingo until the WWI armistice (after which she again became the Appam). "OSLOFJORD" with caption taken from the ship's name showing prominently, unused color postcard issued by the Norwegian America Line (NAL), envelope glue disturbance on back from a covered mailing, edges are good. Used by the Royal Navy as a troopship, it struck a mine on December 1 1940, with some loss of life & subsequent controversy (and propaganda) when it was not towed to the nearest port. PRINZESS IRENE OF THE NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD (NDL) LINE

Seven real photo postcards, documenting a transatlantic voyage, with the ship sometimes referred to as Princess Irene in the captions for the English-speaking passengers. The year is 1912, which we get from all 7 captions. We see: a group of well-dressed male passengers standing by a ship life raft (shown upper left), a man & woman reclining in solitude between lifeboats with bilingual "No admittance" sign (2 similar but different--one sepia tone, the other in black & white shown upper right), deck with several passengers & funnels & rigging (shown lower right), the wake of the ship, a well-dressed couple near two large funnels (shown lower left), and a view from the forecastle including 2 smokestacks.

During World War I the Prinzess Irene became the USS Pocahontas, a US Navy transport ship. After that war she sailed again under a German flag for NDL.

    "R.M.(sic) CELTIC / 20,904 TONNAGE, 700 FT. LENGTH, 754 FT. BREADTH, 13,000 I.H.P." real photo postcard from C. W. Hunt & Co., very late usage at Edenton Ohio (2 different cancels clearly struck, one ties a 1955 rehabilitation seal), slight curl to the paper, one corner multiply creased but not into image, long surface crack in the glossy finish. The caption should read R.M.S. Celtic, which was registered to the White Star Line in 1901. This ill-fated ship saw 17 people aboard die as a result of a mine in 1917, then torpedoed in 1918 with a loss of 6 souls & finally run aground off Queenstown in 1928. $25.00 s(w)s(o)di-o

LINE", unused post card includes Japanese captioning, trivial wear at one corner, otherwise fairly fresh. Launched May 1939, this luxury trans-Pacific luxury liner was sold to the Imperial Japanese Navy in February 1941 which converted her into the Taiyö-class escort carrier Chuyo. During World War II, it carried prisoners of war (including from Wake Island & from the sinking of submarine USS Sculpin). In the fall of 1942 she was converted into an escort aircraft carrier.     "S. S. PRESIDENT HOOVER  S. S. PRESIDENT COOLIDGE" unused post card showing the ship underway, Dollar Steamship Lines logo on lightly toned back, trivial edge wear. Both ships were ill-fated. The President Coolidge was a luxury cruise liner that became a military ship during World War II; it sank with loss of 2 lives off Vanuatu while it was serving as a troopship. The President Hoover was mistakenly bombed by Nationalist Chinese on 30 August 1937, with one life lost. More often seen as a transatlantic passenger ship, she was for a time the largest of that type (after the Titanic sank), beginning life as the SS Imperator for the Hamburg America Line.
