a child. French is colloquial,
argumentative & sarcastic-- something to the effect "Why not women
lawyers? Men do a lousy job at it! Look what they have
done in politics & public affairs ... I greet the advent of new times when
women are in business." Undivided back postcard,
mailed circa 1900 - 1903, small corner crease, minor edge wear, album
impressions at the corners. The baby in the picture
probably symbolizes the non-voting status of women under the Napoleonic
code, under which they were essentially treated as children. Sold but still available for scholarly

Sepia-tone
real-photo postcard showing 2 college-age men with their musical
instruments, mailed Feb 4 1914 at Lexington Nebraska. Exceptionally
interesting message: "Am going uptown to-night to hear a speech against the
Catholics. Are having quite a time here over religion now." According to the
Clipper-Citizen weekly of Feb 6 1914, the speaker was William Lloyd Clark.
He spoke to a standing-room-only crowd on February 2 & 3 (the card was
mailed next day) at Smith's opera house. His pre-announced topic was an
innocuous sounding 'Public Schools, Free Speech and Press'. But the local
Catholics knew of the career anti-Catholic pamphleteer & speaker by
reputation & promptly circulated a petition for signatures asking their city
council to suppress the meeting. Some signed it, some did not & were
threatened with a boycott of their businesses. The meeting was peaceful, and
so too was the aftermath. William Lloyd Clark continued travelling
extensively well into the mid-1920's. He later identified himself with the
Independent Klan of America, which some label a splinter group of the Ku
Klux Klan (KKK). In any event, when the KKK began its resurgence -- some say
1914, some 1915 -- they found his many anti-Catholic pamphlets useful &
circulated them widely at their meetings. Clark also published ads in the
KKK Dawn asking for subscriptions. An interesting piece of social history.
